Houston Air Conditioning | Air Conditioners | Houston AC

Many homes in the Houston area have a heating and cooling system consisting of a central air conditioner and a furnace. This combination has been popular for decades and is known as a split system, or a central air conditioner split system. Rather than having both units in one place, as in a packaged system, the system is split between the condensing unit which is outside, usually on a pad next to the house, and the furnace which is inside the home. Here in greater Houston, where basements are not as common as in most parts of the country, furnaces are typically found in first floor utility room, or even in an attic – or as we sometimes call it, a Texas basement.

The condensing unit of the central air conditioner includes the compressor that pumps the refrigerant through the system as well as an outdoor coil, the condenser and a motor-driven fan. The last major component of the air conditioner is the inside coil that is housed within the furnace cabinet. It is sometimes called an A-coil due to its shape. If your home does not have a gas furnace, then the inside unit in a split system is typically called an air handler because it has a motor and fan that circulates air through your home’s ductwork. The A-coil will be found in the air handler. In some cases, the blower and coil are in separate though connected housings and are called a modular blower and a cased coil.

Central air conditioner split systems are quite efficient and offer excellent climate control in most homes. They are quite affordable and easy to maintain. Systems with a gas furnace are common here in Houston despite our fairly warm climate.
